Flying into the Delta
Okavango Delta, Botswana - Day 10
Today's Transportation:
Car from lodge to Botswana border
Cross border on foot
New car from other side of border to Kasane Airstrip
Bush Plane from Kasane Airstrip to Kwai Airstrip (dirt runway)
Safari Vehicle from Kwai Airstrip to camp
Katie and I stepped off the plane and we met Gareth. He is the owner/operator of Walk Botswana Safari's and will be our guide for the next week in the bush. After an hour or so we made it to camp for the first time and met the team: "Katy" (our chef!), "Cody" (Gareth's lead right hand man), and "Tommy". (These are the names they gave us and used, but Gareth later told us that they all have traditional names but go by nicknames so they don't have to listen to the tourist butcher them all the time). We had a delightful lunch and got our stuff squared away in the tent before heading out on our first game drive!
Sightings of Note:
A large herd of elephants (around forty to fifty) crossing the Kwai river which included several youngsters and a TINY BABY
Our first leopard!
Hyena
More varieties of antelope than you probably knew existed
Lots of 'big' game: giraffe, elephants, hippos, and buffalo
Milestone:
19th Country we have been to
