Vikings and Waterfalls

Árnessýsla, Iceland - Day 4

Þjóðveldisbærinn is a reconstruction of an Icelandic viking farmstead and our first stop of the day. The longhouse was built on top of the foundation of an actual viking home that was thought to be abandoned in 1104 during an eruption from Hekla, a large and still active volcano in the area. Built right next to the longhouse was a replica of a building of worship. After Katie and I had explored both buildings, we made our way to Gjáin, a small valley oasis of greenery, waterfalls, and streams in the middle of a rocky volcanic field.
