Whale Watching

Akureyri, Iceland - Day 10

In a spurt of spontaneity, Katie and I purchased a couple tickets yesterday to go whale watching in Eyjafjörður fjord. We took the 'party' seats at the front of the boat and enjoyed the frigid journey, seeing three humpback whales. Two of the whales had traveled together for a time apparently and our guide said that that behavior was weird for the solitary humpback. The boat would travel to a spot where the captain was confident we would see a whale and then wait to see one's spray as they breath at the surface. A humpback will surface 4 or five times to breathe before taking a deeper dive. On their last surface before a deeper dive, they will rotate their body and their tail fin pops out of the water for a moment. After that, they wont surface for several minutes at least. After watching the whales in the fjord, we explored Akureyri's botanical garden and ended the day with some delicious Thai food.
