Traveling North
Kinigi, Rwanda - Day 4
The Emeraude Kivu Resort had been good to us, but we had to move on. Katie and I took off North along the shores of lake Kivu. As we drove through a few villages, we could tell something was going on as many people were gathered in town. In one town I did see a stage and someone dancing, but not sure if they were all related or all independently had events going on. Half way to our next lodge we stopped for lunch and soaked in another view of the lake. Katie had pasta and I had some delicious chicken drumsticks that were coated in Jiju seasoning and served with a ginger chili sauce. Soon we were at the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge and greeted with a warm towel to wash our hands and local coffee, which I really like! I am not a coffee expert, but I thought it tasted a bit less bitter and more chocolaty than regular black coffee. A member of staff led us through the grounds to our cabin and got a fire going for us. The two of us were sitting next to the fire when we heard drums and singing. In the courtyard in between all the cabins, some local performers were demonstrating tribal dance and music. After their performance we asked if we could take a picture with them and they let me play the drums! I've missed my calling, let me tell you. I was bopping this and booping that. In the heat of the moment I found myself performing a twenty-five minute drum solo to which I received a standing ovation! (Disclaimer: parts of this drum experience were exaggerated)After a delightful dinner (a large group from China were at the lodge and they had a special stir fry going which I couldn't pass up and it was delicious!), Katie and I returned to our room which had a fire roaring and hot water bottles in the bed. Just as the staff had said to us, we slept 'like baby gorillas!'
